John Walz, cello
John Walz is a celebrated soloist and chamber music artist, known for his dazzling virtuosity and elegant musicianship. A student of the legendary French cellist, Pierre Fournier, he has appeared as soloist with more than 150 symphony orchestras on four continents. His performances of 25 different concertos include both standard showcases and rarities like Martinů’s Concerto #1 and William Schuman’s Song of Orpheus. In 1979, Mr. Walz, along with pianist Edith Orloff, founded the Pacific Trio. Now performing with violinist Roger Wilkie, this renowned ensemble has played over 900 concerts throughout North America and Europe.
Hailed by the LA Times as “combining singing warmth and clean virtuosity…there was plenty of dash, and just enough nuance”, Walz is currently the principal cellist with the Los Angeles Opera, a position he previously held for 20 years with the Long Beach Symphony.
His ever-expanding discography includes recordings of concertos by DvoÅ™ák, Haydn, Shostakovich, Bloch, Martinů, and Vivaldi, and trios by Brahms, DvoÅ™ák, and Smetana, as well as the newly released Pacific Trio CD featuring Beethoven’s Triple Concerto and Archduke Trio.
He is on the faculty of the Idyllwild Arts Academy summer program.

Eric Schultz, clarinet
Eric Schultz is an American clarinetist acclaimed for his concerto performances, inventive chamber collaborations, and trailblazing interpretations of new music. He maintains an active concerto schedule, performing with orchestras worldwide, and can be seen and heard on Netflix and National Public Radio.
Through bold collaborations with some of today’s most innovative composers, Schultz is a driving force in shaping the future of the clarinet. He has premiered over 50 solo and chamber works, many written for and dedicated to him, dramatically expanding the instrument’s repertoire and expressive range. Dubbed a “superstar muse” by renowned composer Amanda Harberg and “a sensation” by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Corigliano, Schultz is known for his liquid, soulful tone quality and singular abilities on the instrument, including limitless technical facility, improvisations that span many dialects, and an impossible five-octave range through the stratosphere celebrated as “screaming clarinet.”
Schultz serves as Associate Professor of Clarinet at Coastal Carolina University, where he is coordinator of the woodwind area and director of the Center for Collaborative Research. His debut solo album, POLYGLOT, released by Navona Records, showcases a collection of virtuosic new works written for him. I Care If You Listen of the American Composers Forum praised the album, highlighting a “keen sense of lyricism” and “uncommon sensitivity and precision of expression.” Schultz completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in clarinet performance at Stony Brook University. As a Buffet Crampon performing artist, he performs exclusively on Buffet Crampon clarinets. @ericschultzclarinet
